A Focused Look Into the Past and the Present

With A Vision of Our Future

1. For thousands of years the ancient shaman and cult leader, followed by priests, pastors, rabbis and imams have used their formulations, mysterious rituals, and “holy” words and “signs” to control the consciousness of humanity. Most of them seem to represent angry gods who demand justice, namely, a worthy payment for wrong-doing or for being unable to live up to the god’s high standards and “published” demands.

2. Since these religions of the world have enslaved many followers with fears and doubts for their future, forcing the thoughtful few to question and even deny such a god’s existence, it is time to expose these religions and their methods. And it is time to enlighten humanity about the scandalous justice of the living, loving, forgiving and gracious God who invites us to join him in his Reality. And that, already, here and now, while we relate to each other humanely in the freedom and liberty given to us. Neither his justice nor the liberty and freedom offered to us have strings attached to them. He has invited us into his family. Think of it: sons and daughters of God at peace with each other!

3. Yes, it’s true! God has NO PAYBACK justice demands for our past inhuman behavior. He knows us and our very basic mineral construction. He knows our limitations, but he also knows our possibilities. He declares his unconditional forgiveness and love for us, accepting us as we are, and invites us to join his family and move on to bigger and better things.

4. God knows that his good news empowers a genuine turn-around to behaving more humanely toward each other. The news of his unconditional forgiveness and accepting love for us encourages and enables us to forgive and love and accept each other instead of taking advantage of each other, trying to control each other, or avoiding each other.

5. This message from God releases his justice and goodness among humans. He calls it a NEW thing because it is absolutely scandalous when compared to the payback demands of any religion! He knows that forgiveness that depends upon payment is NO forgiveness at all. Authentic forgiveness has NO strings attached to it. God’s forgiveness is authentic.

6. It is time to proclaim his message and pursue our happiness, not fear. It is time to explore and invent and produce and market and sell and share, not sit back and expect handouts for doing nothing. It is time to succeed and celebrate and party together! This life is a gift to us to use wisely while learning from the lessons of the past.

7. It is time to release those who are enslaved, and it is long past time to comfort and lend a hand to those who are oppressed by their past, their thoughts and their circumstances, all of which can be enlightened and changed by God’s good news. We can care for the widow and the orphan who are challenged with providing for themselves. The blind, the deaf, the lame, the poor, the homeless – we can “teach them all how to clean up and fish” for something that will help themselves AND others as well.

8. There is more than enough to do for everyone! God’s humanitarian justice is his good news to everyone of all races and cultures. It is announced for our comfort and our relief. And it is an incentive for doing good.

9. Again, God’s justice is his righteousness, his judgment. And it is indeed scandalous compared to the payback justice required by all the justice systems in this world, especially religion. Justice is God’s core attribute. God’s forgiving mercy IS his justice! It is his judgment call, pure and simple and very comforting indeed:

  • Bless the Lord O my soul…..Who pardons all your iniquities; Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit; The Lord performs acts of justice and judgments for all who are oppressed…..He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities…..As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us…..For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust. (Psalm 103:1-14)
  • I did not speak to your fathers, or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. (Jeremiah 7:22)
  • I reject your festivals nor do I delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer up to Me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them…. Take away from Me the noise of your songs…. But let justice roll down like waters and righteousness as an over-flowing stream. (Amos 8:21-24)
  • With what shall I come to the Lord?… Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has told you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord expect of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah:6-8)
  • To do judgment and justice is desired by the Lord rather than sacrifice. (Proverbs 21:3)
  • I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; And the knowledge of God, more than burnt offering. (Hosea 6:6)
  • To see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably. (Genesis 33:10)
  • I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers, and I will keep my covenant with you…. I will put my dwelling place among you, and I will not abhor you. I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves… I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high. (Leviticus 26:9-13)
  • Now may the Lord’s strength be revealed, just as he has declared: The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. (Numbers 14:17-18)
  • How can I curse those who God has not cursed? How can I denounce whom the Lord has not denounced? (Numbers 23:8)
  • Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly…and proclaim that their hard work is over, that their inhumane behavior is forgiven….lift up your voice with strength. Do not be afraid. Tell them this is the kind of God they have! (Isaiah 40:1,9)

You can find many more….

10. Only humanity can bear God’s image and his likeness, his humanitarian justice. A religious system cannot bear either one of them. It cannot be a substitute for God’s authentic justice. Leaving your wife crying at home over a misunderstanding while you go off to church to honor the Sabboth is inhuman behavior. It does not exemplify God’s authentic loving justice.

11. This is not to say that people within a religious denomination or sect are incapable of being humane to each other or even to those “outside the camp” of their doctrine. Of course they can! Humane behavior mirrors the loving justice of God. Even religions cannot keep their members from practicing it. Nor does this say that those outside the church cannot be humane to their neighbors. Rather, they are sometimes far more humane than the very religious are. Humane acts are always done freely, without strings attached and without expectations for returned favors. This behavior does not “pay back” a wrong for a wrong received. It does not even require payment or sacrifice before forgiveness is offered. It does not look down on anyone as being inferior, and it does not look up to anyone as being superior. It does not pay homage to a sky-god. It “pays forward” freely to another human being.

12. Powerful and religious men have selfishly misrepresented God and covered up his real love and generosity for centuries, but know this: God is NOT a God wanting punishment or revenge. And he is not the God of the dead either. He is the God of love and forgiveness, and he is the God of the living. If God has set you free from all their religious righteousness and dogma, then you ARE free indeed, free to be productive and humane, and you shall never cease to exist in spite of what others may witness – in spite of a lifeless body, beaten, diseased, drowned, burned, or blown up.

13. Our life is attached to God’s living breathing life and we will continue to live and enjoy his Reality, his expanding universes which even the Hubble telescope has not seen. Mythologies and religious notions must not hide God’s justice and promised Reality any longer.

14. God is neither a Jew, nor a Christian, nor a Muslim. Yet all three had a common father in Abraham who believed God’s promise of a Reality far from his homeland. Abraham never actually took possession of the promised “land.” In fact, he had to purchase a cave there to bury his wife’s body in and he prepared it for his own body as well. Why? Because in the end, it was not the “land” God was promising to Abraham. It was his Reality! The “land” merely symbolized the REAL thing: being in the presence of  God and his family, God’s Reality. So “he was gathered to his fathers.”

15. Abraham believed God’s unconditional loving and forgiving justice as well as God’s promise that he AND his children (“look to the stars and try to count them”) would participate in this Reality of God. Abraham got the symbolism. He believed it, and that’s all that mattered to God. The result was that Abraham practiced humanitarian justice toward his neighbors and won their respect and admiration for doing so.

16. Although many of Abraham’s children did get it, others did not seem to get it at all. Still, God continued to call himself the God of Abraham (the believer who set the stage for accepting God’s Promise), Isaac (the dependent one who learned what it means to trust God as Provider), and Jacob (the deceiver who took advantage of his brother and his uncle yet found God’s forgiveness and blessing in each of their faces). That means he is the God of Hank and you as well, in spite of our faults!

17. Later, prophets of God complained about the religious rituals that were hiding God’s forgiving acceptance and gracious promise. Some of them were even put to death for speaking against such “holy” things. Their leaders had become hung up on the land itself and on their authority instead of on Abraham’s legacy, God’s acceptance and his promised Reality. Sometimes they were conquered and taken away into slavery, and it took a while for them to begin listening again to those who still “got it” and shared it. It is possible for life’s adversities to refocus our priorities, just like a pruning can bring forth more blossoms and fruit. Although adversity does not come to us as punishment from God, he CAN use it for our good.

18. The man, Jesus, a “hillbilly” Jew from Gallilee who some called a prophet of God, got it. He believed and taught this same simple humanitarian justice of God. And he encouraged a rejuvenation of Abraham’s faith in God’s saving declaration and promise. He taught: God is a gracious, loving, forgiving God who does not demand offerings, sacrifices, fasting, or atonement; his “kingdom” (Reality) is promised to ALL of humanity, not just to a chosen few; love and care for each other even as God loves and cares for you; as to your “holy” words that demand payback (“eye for an eye”), forget them! They are not God’s words! Instead, love and forgive your enemies so that they too might turn around and become humane to you.

19. These “new” teachings mirrored the teachings of ”old” Hebrew prophets who had also complained about obedience to religion taking the place of real loving acts among humans.  Jesus’ teachings brought the church leaders’ anger down on him for questioning their authority and the validity of their “holy” words and rituals.  And the Governor quickly convicted him of insurrection for causing raucous public arguments among the religious Jews. Other Jewish rebellions had been led by other “messiahs” in previous years. Such gatherings disturbed the peace of Rome. A death penalty on the cross ended an all too brief clarion call to trust God’s forgiving and accepting love and the generous promise of his Reality.

20. Having experienced his devastating conviction and death, his illiterate followers of God’s forgiveness, love, and generosity found reinforcement and reassurance by sharing and practicing the Galilean’s sayings orally among themselves and others. They quietly encouraged each other with the stories they remembered about his teachings, his being an example of God’s humanitarian justice.

21. Some were hunted down by Temple representatives, then jailed and stoned to death for spreading these teachings and stories. This was an example of Jewish religious extremists showing complete disregard for Roman authority and law and boldly taking it into their own hands – Saul of Tarsus, by name, who grew up on an ancient Sumerian apocalyptic religion, Zoroastrianism. Later (50-55CE), under a new name, he completely reversed Jesus’ unconditional loving message, turning it back into the ancient punishing apocalyptic one and then proceeded to spread his “Christ” atonement myth with a threatening return for judgement among the Gentiles.

22. Another generation passed before the Romans finally had enough of trying to keep the peace with lawless and insubordinate Jews who continued to claim the land as their own, their “god-given” inheritance from their father, Abraham. Roman Legions destroyed Jerusalem, including their Temple and many surrounding Jewish settlements, killing, enslaving, or chasing Jews out of their “holy” land in 70 A.D.

23. During the following generation (70-100 A.D.) scattered members of a new Jewish/Gentile sect, called “Christians” (NOT Jesus’ original followers) began writing their own embellished accounts of Jesus’ life that generally do not fit with his simple life and teachings. One suggested that he was THE Son of God and that he was born of a virgin, both being typical Roman endowments for their heroes. Others described what seemed to be miraculous events performed by Jesus, and claimed that he said certain things which again do not fit with his passionate teachings about the humanitarian justice of a loving God. Later still, another called him the “Word of God made flesh” and finally envisioned him as their Lord and Messiah-Christ who would soon return in judgment and with vengeance toward his (actually their) enemies. – (payback justice again)

24. Hundreds of years later, many concepts, doctrines and traditions were added to the new Christian religion by theologians counseling together at Rome in 382 A.D. and at Nicea in 385 A.D. and finally at Chalcedon in 451 A.D. They expounded on the claims of Jesus’ virgin birth, his incarnation, salvation by his bloody ransom/atonement cross-death, the Triune godhead, several sacramental rituals, concepts of a Fall and a Satan and heaven and hell and purgatory, his return in judgment, and many other concepts including the all-important underlying inspiration theory which declared that all the “acceptable” copies of old manuscripts and ancient Hebrew scrolls chosen by them are “holy” and “inspired” by God.

25. And so it began. The early Jewish Christians and their Gentile converts had effectively created a wall of separation between themselves and their Muslim and Jewish brothers and sisters. Now they had an effective source of power over their constituents. Their mission became to convert everyone over, including the world’s pagan cultures, to their side of the wall where they had created a savior-god out of the man, Jesus, and had “inspired” words to prove it. Unfortunately, their creation and their chosen “holy” words all but smothered the real message and living example of the man, Jesus, namely, God’s humanitarian justice.

26. Mohammed had written and gathered together the Muslim “holiest” of books from out of the desert as well…..

27. Of course, the dispersed Jews had their keepers of copies of the “holy” law scrolls and rituals too…..

28. Abraham’s children, dispersed around the known world, each had their own precious “holy” book with words to use on each other, trying their best to control the rest of God’s family and convert them to their side of their wall.

29. Christians organized crusades to retake the “holy” land from “unholy” Turks and Muslims and any other “unholy” people. Muslims built their “holy” sites on top of “holy” Christian sites. Christians, seeking a “purified” race in one European country, killed millions of Jews to rid their land of the “unholy children” of their forefather Jews with the blood of Jesus on their hands. European Jews returned to their “holy” land and found it divided between “unholy” Muslim sects, so they killed many of them to take it back. What an awful mess Abraham’s children have created for themselves and the rest of the world! And it is obvious from reports that it is not getting any better in 2009.

30. Christians, Jews, and Muslims have all divided into opposing denominations and sects over the years, all temporarily far removed from God’s loving and unconditional humanitarian justice and his generous offering of family status in his Reality. No doubt there are exceptions among their memberships, namely, those who believe better than their priest/pastor/imam/rabbi teaches. In the meantime, God generously continues to invite the rest to turn around and come home! And Jesus’ outrageous stories like the Prodigal Son, the Good Samaritan, and the Generous Land Owner image God’s gracious forgiveness and loving care for ALL humanity!

31. 2000 years of this mission work with very little success for any side should tell us something. Jews, Muslims, and Christians have been killing each other all this time with every kind of weapon you can name, not least of all with “holy” words while “doing God’s will.” A church sign I pass twice a day on the way to and from work reads: “If you think it’s hot now, keep ignoring me. – God” And every day, I pray: “Father, forgive them. They are only following their “holy” formulations. Overwhelm them with your love so that they turn around and embrace your humanitarian justice.” Perhaps their lack of growth will teach them something and the sign will finally come down.

32. A simple solution to all their problems and disagreements with each other could be to let go of what divides them, namely, their “holy” words and formulations and rituals, and then grasp the faith of their father Abraham. Beginning to treat each other as brothers and sisters in the family of God would solve more problems than hours at a negotiating table. Easier said than done? But not impossible. All we need are many more clarion calls declaring God’s humanitarian justice.

33. God’s forgiving declaration and promise to you can turn you around. You can forgive others as often as it takes for them to turn around. You can love them as God loves you. You can invite them to come home with you to enjoy the party! It will only get bigger and better! Many other cultures from India, Asia, China, and Japan have been invited to join God’s family as well. The good news is spreading to all continents… ”look to the stars and try to count them.” No doubt Abraham smiles more every day as he watches it happening here and there and everywhere!

34. The possibilities and vistas that God has placed before a free humanity are endless! His humanitarian justice has the potential to release an enormous flow of human ideas and energy for exploration and invention and production which has never been experienced before on this earth. Those who “get it” know that freedom also anticipates responsibility, not senseless greedy exploitation. The Muslim-inspired periods of Exploration and the Renaissance, the American Revolution and its understanding of individual liberty and limited government, the Industrial Revolution that improved the life of millions around the world, the Technological and Internet Explosion that brought about instant worldwide communication – all only scratched the surface! They certainly offered benefits to all, but they also took undo advantage of resources and of many humans, even bringing slavery to some. We can do so very much better! Resources abound and still remain undiscovered.  Apparently the expanding universes are anticipating these possibilities!

35. Unfortunately, we can already hear the environmentalists shouting: “No! No! No!”  We are grateful that their past love for raw nature has been able to overcome greedy humans exploiting the environment and has been able to persuade governments to set aside numerous national monuments for remembering natural wonders. However, environmentalism has become a predominant” religion” around the world today. Their purpose is no longer to save a natural wonder of nature for posterity to enjoy. Their love for nature has grown into hatred for humanity which they now believe needs to be controlled as the enemy of their “nature” god.

36. In the past they were able to prove their concerns with real scientific data and studies. Today, they have come to depend upon their “irrefutable” (holy/inspired) words taken from pseudo-science sources and twisted observations which fit their purposes for control. Their “prophets” have been able to convince world powers of fearful (hellish) consequences to humanity if their imposed “doctrines” are not followed to the letter. Choosing the natural cyclical events of global warming and cooling as their mantra, they twist honest data to blame human energy use for the changes, changes which were actually taking place centuries before humans ever began using modern natural energy supplies.

37. This is not unlike the theologians of the 4th and 5th century who twisted God’s humanitarian justice as proclaimed by the first followers of Jesus and then produced their “holy” words of condemnation and salvation. H.L. Mencken once wrote: “The urge to save humanity is always a false front for the urge to rule it.” First they find fault and a supposed reason to blame, then they seek control through a well-planned salvation theory based on “holy” words. It is the same old repeated course of those who desire power, those who do not “get it!”

38. To be sure, misuse of local natural resources can be devastating to local communities, and such inhumane insensitivities must not be overlooked by government. But it must be said that environmentalists are anti-humanitarian hypocrites when they abhor all progress toward improving the human condition while they buy enough “credits” to keep such advantages for themselves.

39. Currently, they are claiming enough power to force industries to cap “over-production” and the power to tax them and us for “overuse” of energy resources. Their concepts of over-production of goods and overuse of energy will soon be determined and backed up by Federal Law! Not since the Dark Ages has a “religion” had such power over humans and governments! It must also be said that their greed and lust for power and control conflicts with God’s humanitarian justice and the freedom it releases.

40. The real question is: How can we find forgiveness and love in our hearts for these insensitive and misinformed humans so that they too may turn around from oppressing us and instead come home to God’s party? Perhaps we could give them an opportunity to think more clearly by taking away their powerful positions and no longer give them access to a historically naive audience. Removing the soapbox from those who are obviously seeking power and control over us makes them less visible and more common among other humans. This alone can inspire a reassessment of self and their message. We can do this by seeking out those who embrace God’s humanitarian justice and the freedom with responsibility that it encourages, then place them into leadership positions through our votes.

41. See? All is not lost. There still is hope. REAL change for the good of all is possible! To be sure, we have much to do to catch up to Abraham! It all begins by questioning the motives of those who wish to run our lives. If unsound, then pull the public alarm, but quickly offer an alternative that you know will encourage and bring out the best in humans. Without the tried and true alternative, you would only be spreading an alarm of fear and be no better than those who try to scare you into submission. Vigilance, knowledge of history, love of freedom, and the willingness to exemplify and proclaim it to our neighbors and across the land, even around the world, these are our responsibilities. God’s family is a loving active family.

42. God is so patient with us! For a good chuckle, read the final “old f..t” musings of the Teacher, Solomon, who thought he had seen it all, done it all, and learned it all. They are so true to life! He begins by saying that there is really nothing new under the sun (including the worship of “holy” words and the worship of nature) and that everything is actually meaningless. But then he goes on to share his wisdom in spite of this conclusion.

43. His final advice is to share the wisdom we have learned anyhow (cast your bread on the waters) just as he was doing, with the hope that it might be picked up and understood and not return to you untouched. When all is said and done, remembering our Creator and sharing his justice and judgment is all that really matters. His last words are that “BOTH good and evil, hidden or not, will finally face this justice of God in the end.”

44. By now I hope you know what that means… God forgives and welcomes even those who some of us cannot yet forgive! It is God’s scandalous final judgment call!  Can you imagine the knowing smiles on many faces, like Abraham’s? Can you imagine the surprised looks on many other faces? And can you imagine how overwhelmed they will feel, especially when those they had oppressed in this life, maybe even killed, step forward to reassure them and lead them arm-in-arm to God’s Real Party? And what would you expect their behavior to be from then on? I already have a hunch that they will seriously want to forget about their terrible past and instead want to catch up with rest of the family, and do both quickly! Let this suffice as an answer to those who anticipate God’s punishing hellish vengeance carried out on those who refuse to believe the church’s message of salvation. Even the creative artist knows how senseless it would be to destroy his life’s work. How much more would the Creator work his justice to salvage such a marvelous image of himself!

45. In the meantime, letting go of “holy” words does not mean destroying or disregarding copies of the old Hebrew and Muslim and early Christian manuscripts. They still hold stories of the struggle for the survival of humanitarian justice among those who “got it.” They hold history, embellished as it became and salted by those who did not grasp how simple human lives and personal relationships could possibly hold such a Godly treasure without more flair and excitement and headline news events to substantiate the story. Hidden as they are by the religions of today, the words and stories of God’s humanitarian justice can still be searched for and found there for our encouragement.

46. An Old Testament Teacher agreed with this scandalous justice of God and said in Ecclesiastes 3:11 to all who would listen:  “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He also has planted God’s Reality in men’s hearts and minds, a divinely implanted sense of a purpose working through the ages which nothing under the sun but God alone can satisfy.”

 47. The news of God’s loving humanitarian justice, freely offered to us, does encourage and empower the same forgiving acceptance toward our family, neighbors, friends, strangers, and even our enemies. It makes a difference here and now! And God is totally aware of our limitations and that we will need a lot more time than this brief mineral life to get it right. But it is getting started that is important right now. Yes, His Reality is already experienced in each forgiving hug and every unexpected and kindly gesture or reassuring smile, but don’t we wish that we could do even more for that person in need? And yes, we are thankful for such opportunities to share our own talents, skills, and knowledge to someone else’s benefit, but don’t we ever think about sitting at the feet of Michalangelo or DiVinci or Bach or Mozart and other masters of creativity? God has placed this yearning and anticipation within us. There is much more to His Reality than we already enjoy as first fruits. But we don’t need any more information than that to dream about. We have more than enough to keep us busy for now: inventing, exploring, building, learning, and helping and forgiving….

I confess to having spent too much of my life searching for religious truths found in the “pure” doctrinal writings and confessions of the Lutheran Protestant churches of the Reformation. Exclusive fellowship was our error. Fortunately, my searching led me elsewhere. You will quickly recognize that many thoughts and words in my Blog found their roots in Australia if you link to http://bobbrinsmead.com . I have been a grateful student of Robert Brinsmead for more than 40 years, and it will show when you read him. More recently, I have taken further interest in another Canadian blog: http://www.wendellkrossa.com

Please return to my Blog occasionally to look for additional personal discoveries. Life is a journey of growth and development as we explore what is around us and, paraphrasing Robert Frost, we take the road less traveled, and discover that it has made all the difference. What I have shared here are not realizations that should encourage anyone to finish their further exploration. Expect me to find a better way to express the truth found in God’s humanitarian justice, especially after I learn from your comments and life experiences. Again, a special thank you to my mentors and to you for reading and considering what I have discovered this far into my journey. I hope you can help it to go around the world…..

God’s peace and comfort to all of you!
